So the good thing about Akshay’s deadlines for the book was that I finally stirred from my slumber, stupor and scattiness and typed up all my handwritten translations. Here they are, after all the necessary tweaking, fine-tuning and filibustering. Raphael’s, Roselyne’s and Zoë’s poems, in three consecutive posts. (With apologies for the dreadful double spaces that I simply do not know how to banish in this format. And PDFs for those who cannot view the Bangla script on their browsers.)

i did not invent the
trees but learnt their
names gave your’s
to some they did not
object and repeated it
in the wind even
the wind carries it well
from tree to tree to you.
from: a round dance
beatrice i sing when no one hears me
i devise names for you with a soft voice
i am well beatrice thank you i hum
and don’t just carry you on my lips with
full lungs i expel you from within me and
love you in my remembrance as a high note
in the head in the ear i hear you beatrice
norma and i that is a poem
a mesh a thicket in which there
is room only for norma and me
norma and i slash our way through
the poem and pitch a tent in the clearing
norma and i sleep close our
tent is of words that mean us
zoe you have lost an earring
i stroke the grass like a sleeping beast
zoe you have lost an earring
i comb the grass like you comb your hair
zoe i can’t find your earring
i grope in the grass that is grey by night
zoe your earring must be somewhere else
i have knelt for so long in the darkness before you
zoe the air smells of earth
i search in vain the soil is soft
zoe your earring maybe lost forever
i can find only twigs and stones in the grass
zoe just have a little more patience
i stay on my knees and i search for your sake
zoe you have lost an earring
i will not give up till you have it again
zoe you bend down and help with the search
i find the earring in your hair
lea when i look at the moon
that is slowly becoming full
i do not think of you the
moon has nothing in common
with you lea its pale its craggy
its light bone-white surface does
not resemble you in the least and
still dear lea i think of you whether
or not i see the slow full moon
because even before i saw it lea
most of all i was thinking of you
magdalena you may not know
how to work the washing machine
but you do know what’s what
I for instance mean something to you
and that makes about as much sense for you
as it makes me into some thing so
the fact of the matter is magdalena
if I may now think of myself as a thing
I can then say that there are things
you don’t know how to work
and I take that to mean that you also
wouldn’t know how to work me
all things being washing machines
but magdalena we are not we say
happily we other things we
are ready to help please help yourself
Hooha! May is looking busier (and post Springier) by the moment.
Yes, indeedy! What’s missing in this post is Raphael’s original German text…if anyone, including the poet, has it, do add!
